Underwater Wonders

April 01, 2014

Snorkelers and scuba divers: Prepare for something out of (and under) this world. Located off the coast of nearby Isla Mujeres, the Cancun Underwater Museum is mind-blowing. Featuring the works of English sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor and other sculptors, it was designed to counter storm damage to reef areas. The collection of life-sized sculptures began in 2009 and now features 500 awe-inspiring works that, together, create an artificial reef system where coral and marine life happily cohabitate. The sculptures are crafted of pH-neutral marine concrete and many depict community locals – though perhaps unrecognizable as they're now covered in coral. You can also catch a glimpse of these underwater wonders from glass-bottom boats that regularly ferry guests of Riviera Maya resorts to the site. Trust us, this is a sight you don't want to miss.
