Take a break from the beach and hit the thriving streets of Mexico by visiting Quinta Avienda, a festive and famous shopping center located in downtown Playa del Carmen, a short fifteen minutes from The Reef Playacar. Nestled beneath the teeming trees and breathtaking sun, Quinta Avienda has much to offer, from restaurants to colorful prints of local art. Be sure to bring your haggling skills with you in case you find something special from one of the many vendors along the avenue, or hang on to your pesos until you head to the Playa Playacar Shopping Mall and find a more familiar shop from back home. If it gets too hot, grab a coconut from one of the vendors and slip in a straw. For lunch, take your pick of Quinta Avienda’s authentic Mexican restaurants and wash it down with a local beer at one of the nearby bars. At night, the streets come alive beneath trees wrapped with lights, and the air beats with festive guitar music. Toss a coin or two into the shimmering fountains or snap a picture under the mystical and historical Portal Maya sculpture, which was built to celebrate the end of the much debated Mayan calendar in 2012. On a special night, you might catch a performance in the middle of the avenue, complete with four-foot drums and influences of the ancient Maya. Watch the performers dance over fire and twist around their partners. Over dinner, let a mariachi band serenade your family as you munch on tapas, chilaquiles, carne asada, and maybe even a few more drinks. If you’re seeking something a little more low-key, wander around the avenue until you hear a familiar rock song drifting down from a balcony, or duck into a winery or quiet jewelry store to escape the crowd. And when you’ve gotten your fill of Quinta Avienda, head back to your room at The Reef Playacar for a good night’s sleep.
