Sea Turtle Sanctuary

April 01, 2014

If logging time with a Loggerhead tops your to-do list, a visit to Tortugranja (the Turtle Farm) on nearby Isla Mujeres is a must. A public-private partnership, this sanctuary for endangered sea turtles is open daily year-round but summertime visits are perhaps the most rewarding. Every summer, the farm oversees the release of thousands of baby sea turtles. If you visit between May and October, ask how you can participate in these island-wide events. Whether you visit solo or alongside a group of Riviera Maya hotel visitors, the farm's guided tours through indoor and outdoor pool areas and touch tanks offer great opportunities to learn more about Mexico's sea turtle conservation efforts.
