Come to Cozumel

Come to Cozumel

August 01, 2016

If you’re looking to expand your horizons while staying in the Yucatan, one of the best locations to do so near Playa del Carmen is Cozumel, a small but famous island not too far from the mainland and our Coco Beach resort. Cozumel, Mexico’s largest island, is one of the friendliest places for tourists, as it is a frequent stop for cruise ships sailing through the Yucatan. Rich with history, both Mayan and European, Cozumel has a variety of options for the perfect day trip.

Your day trip to this fabulous island may include lounging on the pristine beaches, snorkeling, scuba diving, exploring Mayan ruins, and bird watching. Cozumel is home to many endangered species of animals, ranging from brightly-colored birds to pygmy raccoons. Make yourself a scavenger hunt and try to locate each of Cozumel’s unique species.

When you’re ready for lunch, consider going to Chankannab Park. With snorkel rentals, gardens, beaches, restaurants, and a museum, this park provides the perfect setting for any outdoor activity. If you know you’ll want to spend all day at this beautiful park, skip the scavenger hunt and try to get there early—it’s popular for a reason.

If you’re more of a shopper, downtown San Miguel is a true paradise. Sidewalks are likely to be overflowing with guests from docked cruises, but you can explore shops that are hidden in corners or off the beaten path. A good way to do this is to take the streets between the ocean and shops, where you can find unique crafts, hammocks, ceramics, and textiles to take back home with you. A sampling of authentic Yucatan cuisine is also available in this area, so wherever you go in Cozumel, you will never be hungry. At the end of the day, take the ferry back to Playa del Carmen and The Reef at Coco Beach, where your room will be patiently waiting for you.
