Everyone knows the ancient Maya cultivated corn but did you know they also cultivated chewing gum? It’s true and, incredibly, the process has changed little in the 4,000 years since. To see it for yourself, simply tag along on a new tour that brings the primitive practice to life. The tour takes you into a rainforest jungle near Tulum, where a machete-equipped local guide from nonprofit eco-tour company Community Tours Sian Ka’an climbs a chewing gum tree (aka chicozapote tree), slashes its bark to reveal a sticky sap that, once stirred, heated and stretched, becomes gum. Add a shake of cinnamon or sprig of mint, slice and enjoy a little piece of Mayan history. Too tired to tour? Look for the finished product – Chicza – at the airport.
