Swim Alongside the Gentlest Giants of the Sea

September 07, 2017

Some of the sea’s gentlest animals, sea turtles abound in the warm waters of the Yucatan, making them ideal swimming companions. Their serene nature is matched only by their impressive size, with the largest among them, the leatherback, growing up to 3 meters (over 9 feet) in length. To meet these majestic creatures, we recommend traveling about 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen to Akumal. The easiest and most economical way to do this is to take one of the “colectivo” taxis, which will carry you right to Akumal Bay. Once there, just wade out into the water. Access to the beach and the turtles is absolutely free. Try to leave six feet between yourself and the nearest turtle, though. They are no threat to you, but they become uneasy if approached too closely, so the six foot rule is for the turtles’ comfort. Our resort staff will be happy to explain how to catch one of the safe, reliable “colectivo” group taxis, or arrange customized transportation at your request. We can also provide the snorkeling equipment you’ll need to make the most of your day beneath the waves.
